Yellow Jackets Volleyball's Record Breaking Season

(9-28-16) Last season a new coach and a transfer setter, add this season a Senior playing in her first season and a veteran hitter up front, make up a formula that is highlighting Sidney's girls' volleyball program this season. Numerous records are falling and it's been a team effort.

Four different Yellow Jackets have been a part of this 'record breaking' season, Setter Carrie Nuss, became the all-time single season assist leader and now has her eyes on the career record, Celena Taborn holds the records for most blocks in a single-season, Amanda Thomas is the all-time hits leader and Kiana Calvert looks to set a new record for aces and digs in a season.

Next up for Sidney is with rival Piqua at home on Friday night in a GWOC match.

Carrie Nuss

Sidney Head Volleyball Coach Lauren Morrow

Carrie Nuss (Setter) is the new record holder for Sidney High School for assists in a season. The previous record set in 2014 was 391, and Carrie has totaled 412 this season with 6 games remaining in regular season. Carrie transferred as a sophomore and was not able to play in our first five games last season, but nevertheless recorded 357 assists in 2015 for a total of 769 assists in her career at Sidney Carrie needs just 193 more to break the career assist total. This speaks volumes about Carrie's talent and her importance to our program.

Carrie came to Sidney at a time when she was very much needed. I came in as a new coach last year and was told I had no setter, and then Carrie appeared over the summer. She was very quiet when she first arrived, but it wasn't long before we couldn't imagine her not being here. She belonged with us the moment she arrived. Carrie handles a tremendous amount of pressure much of the time, and she is undoubtedly someone we count on every day and do not give enough credit to. I am thrilled for Carrie's accomplishment this year and look forward for what's to come!

Celena Taborn

Sidney Head Volleyball Coach Lauren Morrow

Celena Taborn has broken the records for most blocks in a season (currently at 65) and is holding the record for blocks per game 1.41. Celena is a first year player as a senior and has had an incredible impact on our game! She has an impressive kill efficiency of .306 and has recorded 121 kills for us this year!

Amanda Thomas

Sidney Head Volleyball Coach Lauren Morrow

Amanda Thomas is the new record holder for most kills in a career for Sidney. She recorded her 416th kill at Lima Bath this week to break the previous record of 415, and is currently at 435 career kills. Amanda is a four year letter winner for Sidney and is intent on ending her career with a bang. Amanda previously held the record for blocks in a single season (62) before it was broken by teammate Celena Taborn. Thomas also holds the record for most blocks in a career, currently at 180 (previous record was 133). She also currently holds the record for kills per game at 3.54 (broke her own record of 2.37).

Kiana Calvert

Sidney Head Volleyball Coach Lauren Morrow

Kiana Calvert needs 4 aces to break the career ace record and 18 to break the season ace record. She also needs 1 dig to move into second place all time for career digs and 96 to break the record. Kiana is a senior, four year letter winner who has worked extremely hard to get where she is. Kiana plays libero for us, but last season stepped in to set until Nuss was eligible to play, due to transfer rules. Kiana is the backbone of our defense and is someone we expect much out of, but do not always give credit to.
