The First Coldwater Girls Basketball Team
Thanks to Title IX girls high school sports across the country would take a BIG step in to having competetive teams. In Ohio 1976 girls high school basketball would be the start of what we have in place today. That first season the Cavalier girls, with Head Coach Vickie Reitz, would play just eight games and end the season 2-6. Coldwater lost it's first ever game to Parkway 34-17, but would come back in game two to pick up the program's first ever win over Marion Local 42-15. The Cavs other win that season was over Bradford 33-31.
The first four seasons would see four different coaches run the program, in 1977 Coach (?) Ontrop would lead the Cavs to their first ever winning season going 10-4, in 1978 Karen Noll would take over and lead the team to a 3-10 year.
The fourth coach to take over the program in 1979 (9-9) was some guy named 'Charlie Maier'. That turned out to be the best move in the 40 year history of Coldwater girls basketabll as Maier's Hall of Fame career speaks for it's self.
